Pelliot - Paul Pelliot

The world's greatest orientalist born in France. Born in Paris, he graduated from the School of Oriental Languages. At the age of 21, he joined the Indochina Archaeological Survey (the predecessor of the Ecole francois d'Extrédence), and after studying in China, he became a professor at the Ecole francois d'Extrédence in Hanoi in 1901. In 1911, at the young age of 33, he became a professor at the Collège de France, and from 1923, he was involved in the editing of the oriental studies journal T'oung Pao (Message), leading the academic world. His field of study inherited and developed the tradition of sinology (Sinology, Sinology) as a modern academic field established by Professor Abel Remusat of the Ecole francois d'Extrédence, but also went beyond it. In other words, he established a monumental achievement in the history and linguistics of Central Asia before it became Turkestan, Turkish-Mongolian studies including Altaic linguistics, and the history of East-West relations during the Mongol Empire period, and even extended into Tibetan studies and Southeast Asian studies. A decisive role in the formation of his academic studies was played by the Central Asian expedition which he carried out from 1906 to 1909 on behalf of the French academic community. The experiences gained from his survey of the region and the wide variety of artifacts and documents recovered from the Northern Route of the Western Regions and Dunhuang became his lifelong academic assets. His documents are currently housed at the National Library of Paris, and his artifacts at the Guimet Museum. He wrote many books and papers, including "The Hall of a Thousand Buddhas at Dunhuang."
