The capital of Caldas State in central-western Colombia. It is located about 160 km west-northwest of the capital Bogota, on the western slope of the central mountain range of the Andes, at an altitude of about 2,126 m. Because it is located on a small hill overlooking the surrounding area, the city's gray cathedral can be seen from all sides. Although it is a relatively new city, founded in 1848, it is now the center of the country's most important coffee-growing region. In addition to coffee roasting plants, the city has factories for cement, agricultural machinery, silk, textiles, and leather products. It is also home to Caldas University (1950). It is located almost halfway along the main road connecting the capital Bogota and the country's second largest city, Medellin, and is served by a branch line that branches off from the main railway line connecting Cali and Medellin. Population: 281,912 (1985). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
