[Sizing for the paper industry]
To make paper and paperboard resistant to the penetration of liquids, a water-resistant agent (called a size) is added to the raw material during the papermaking process or applied to the surface of the paper. The former is called internal sizing or engine sizing, and the latter is called surface sizing or tub sizing.
