American politician. Fourth president (1809-1817). He played an active role in drafting and establishing the United States Constitution, and was one of the Federalists along with A. Hamilton and J. Jay. He was known as a theorist and was called the "Father of the Constitution." Later, he came into conflict with Hamilton, organized the opposition Republicans, and became Secretary of State (1801-1809) before becoming president, but failed to lead the War of 1812 with Britain.
