Gang - Gang (English spelling) gang

Japanese: ギャング - ぎゃんぐ（英語表記）gang

It means a group of people who work together, and can refer to groups of workers, prisoners, neighborhood groups of boys, or organized criminal groups. Frederic M. Thrasher's (1892-1962) The Gang (1927) is a representative work in this field that studies spontaneously formed juvenile groups in large cities.

Criminal gangs

Members of adult crime syndicates are called gangsters in English. The largest syndicate in American organized crime is the Mafia or Cosa Nostra. There are 24 families across the United States, with 3,000 to 5,000 members. The Mafia originated from a secret society in Sicily, Italy, and is said to have first appeared in American history in New Orleans in 1870. The organization was brought to the big cities on the east coast with the influx of large numbers of Italian immigrant workers, and after fighting with other immigrant groups, it came to dominate the underworld by around 1930. In the Midwest, the organization was established in three cities, St. Louis, Chicago, and Cleveland, due to the large number of unskilled workers who were building railroads. It expanded its influence alongside the Black Hand, reaching its peak during the Prohibition era from 1910 to the 1920s, when it was conquered by Al Capone, the king of the underworld. The organization was also Americanized, and became complicated as a corporate crime organization called Cosa Nostra (Italian for "ours"). Coupled with the rapid expansion of cities and the widespread use of firearms, gang wars have been repeated all the time. Typical examples include the famous Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago in 1929, when Capone attacked the Bugs Moran gang, the Salvatore Maranzano vs. Giuseppe Masseria war in New York, which was said to be the largest massacre with 50 to 60 deaths, the Gallo brothers vs. Joseph Profaci war from 1960 to 1963, and the subsequent Colombo vs. Joseph Gallo fight in 1972.

A family is a unit of the gang, consisting of 20 to 700 members. Most cities have one, and New York has five. The head of the family is called a Don or Capo. The underbosses below him are responsible for collecting information and conveying orders. The consigliere, who acts as an advisor or consultant, has a similar rank to the underboss, but is a semi-retired older member. Below the underbosses are several capoleggia (also known as lutinates), who are the heads of the combat units, and control a large number of soldiers who are rank-and-file members. Their activities range from illegal activities such as gambling, drug smuggling, loan sharking, blackmail, and prostitution to legal activities such as grocery stores, real estate, transportation companies, garbage collection, bars, labor unions, and vending machines.

Its characteristics are that it often extends its tentacles to state and large city administrators, politicians, businessmen, police officers, judges, and prosecutors, and that the organization is extremely secretive. Therefore, while some affirm the existence of the Commission, which is a nationwide alliance of families and the highest governing body, others deny it as a Mafia myth. Furthermore, gangs in western regions such as California and Nevada do not necessarily have this kind of Mafia-type structure. There are also many small gangs that carry out bank robberies and kidnappings in small groups.

成人の犯罪組織の成員は、英語ではギャングスターgangsterとよばれる。アメリカの組織犯罪の最大のシンジケートは、マフィアMafiaあるいはコーザ・ノストラCosa Nostraである。全米の24のファミリーfamilyの下に3000人から5000人がこの組織に属している。マフィアはイタリアのシチリア島の秘密結社に発し、アメリカの歴史に現れたのは1870年ニュー・オーリンズにおいてであるといわれる。東部海岸の大都市への大量のイタリア人移民労働者の流入とともに、この組織が持ち込まれ、他の移民集団との闘争を経て、1930年ごろまでに暗黒街を制覇するに至った。中西部では鉄道敷設の未熟練労働者の大量移住でセントルイス、シカゴ、クリーブランドの3市にその組織ができ、ブラック・ハンド（黒手組）と並びその勢力を拡大し、1910年から1920年代の禁酒法時代にその最盛期を迎え、暗黒街の王者アル・カポネが制圧した。その組織もアメリカナイズされて、企業的な犯罪組織としてコーザ・ノストラ（イタリア語で「われらのもの」の意）とよばれる複雑化を遂げるに至った。都市の急速な拡張、銃器の普及と相まって、ギャング団の闘争はつねに繰り返されてきた。カポネがモランBugs Moran一派を襲った1929年のシカゴの有名なバレンタインデーの虐殺、50人から60人の死者を出し、最大の殺戮(さつりく)といわれたニューヨークのマランツァーノSalvatore Maranzano対マッセリーアGiuseppe Masseria戦争、1960年から1963年のギャロ兄弟The Gallo brothers対プロファッチJoseph Profaci戦争およびその延長の1972年のコロンボJoseph Colombo対ギャロJoseph Gallo闘争などはその典型である。

　単位としてのファミリーは20人から700人の成員からなり、たいていの都市に一つ、ニューヨークには五つある。その長のボスはドンとかカーポとかよばれる。その下のアンダー・ボスの任務は、情報の収集や命令の伝達である。相談役ないし助言者のコンシグリエレは、アンダー・ボスとほぼ同地位だが、半退役の年長メンバーがあたっている。アンダー・ボスの下に実戦部隊の長としての複数のカーポレギア（別名リューティナント）があり、平組員の多数のソルジャーを動かしている。その活動は、非合法面では賭博(とばく)、麻薬の密輸・密売、高利貸、恐喝、売春など、合法面では食料品店、不動産業、運送会社、ごみ清掃、酒場、労働組合、自動販売機などの各方面に及んでいる。

　その特徴は、州や大都市の行政官、政治家、実業家、警察官、判事、検事などにまでしばしばその触手を伸ばしていることや、組織の秘匿性がきわめて強いことである。したがって、ファミリーの全国的な規模の連合体であり、最高支配体であるコミッションの存在についても、これを肯定する者と同時に、マフィアの神話として否定する者もいる。また、カリフォルニア、ネバダなどの西部地域におけるギャングにはかならずしもこのようなマフィア型の構造がみられるわけではない。銀行強盗、誘拐を小集団で行う群小ギャングも少なくない。
