... Founded in 1933, Einaudi became a stronghold of anti-fascist thought and played a leading role in making Turin a new cultural center during and after World War II. C. Pavese, born in Santo Stefano Belbo (exiled to southern Italy in 1935-36 for his anti-fascist activities), Turin-born painter and doctor Levi (exiled to southern Italy in 1935-36), author of Christ Doesn't Stop at Eboli (1945), Russian literature scholar Leone Ginzburg (1909-44), who died in prison, and her wife Natalia Ginzburg, as well as I. Calvino, the last generation of resistance members, were directly involved in Einaudi's editorial activities. As a result, after the war, Einaudi sent out a wide variety of talented people to the world, including B. Fenoglio, G. Arpino, and P. Levi. ...
