Aturia (English spelling)

Japanese: アツリア（英語表記）Aturia

A genus of the cephalopod order Nautiloidea, a fossil mollusc that was widespread in the Tertiary Period. The shell is a tightly wound planar spiral that is disk-shaped. The surface is nearly smooth. The suture has a large, wide ventral crest and a large semicircular lateral crest, separated by an acute lateral valley. There is a wide valley and ridge around the navel, and the left and right crests are separated by a deep valley on the dorsal edge. The body tube is in the middle or dorsal side. Based on the distribution of Atsuria from the Miocene strata in Japan, it was previously argued that after Atsuria's death, its planktonic shell drifted from Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands on the warm currents of the time (the original Kuroshio Current and the original Tsushima Current), pioneering a new field of paleo-current science.

頭足綱オウムガイ目の1属で，第三紀に広く分布した化石軟体動物。殻は密に巻いた平面らせんで，円盤状を呈する。表面はほぼ平滑。縫合線には腹部の大きく幅広い山と側面部の大きな半円形の山とがあって，側面の鋭角状の谷で分かれている。へそ周縁には幅広い谷と山があり，背縁の深い谷で左右の山が分かれている。体管は中部あるいは背側にある。　かつて日本の中新統より産するアツリアの分布から，当時の暖流(原黒潮と原対馬海流)によってアツリアの死後，浮遊性の殻が台湾，琉球方面から漂流したと議論され，古海流学の一分野が開拓された。
