Born October 16, 1620, near Marseille [Died] December 2, 1694. Marseille. French sculptor, painter, and architect. From 1640 to 1643, he worked as a pupil of P. Cortona, decorating the ceilings of Palazzo Barberini in Rome and Palazzo Pitti in Florence. From 1643 to 1656, he was mainly active as a painter in Marseille and Toulon. In 1659, he was invited to Paris, where he produced works at the request of Louis XIV's minister, Fouquet, but after Fouquet's downfall, he worked as a sculptor in Genoa. From 1669 onwards, he lived in Toulon and Marseille. He was known as the most distinctive sculptor of the French Baroque period. His main works include the marble group "Milo of Crotona" (1671-84, Louvre Museum), which decorated the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, and the relief "Alexander and Diogenes" (1671-93, same museum).
