Abbreviation for Electronic Luminescent. A physical phenomenon discovered in France in 1936 in which semiconductors emit light when high voltage is applied to them. Taking advantage of this phenomenon, there are electroluminescent displays (ELD: electroluminescent displays) that display images by depositing EL elements onto a glass substrate. At present, it is difficult to achieve color displays, but research is ongoing. They are also used as a backlight source for liquid crystal displays.
