A theater in Minami-ku, Osaka City. It began as Matsumoto Nazaemon Theater when the Dotonbori Theater representative was appointed in 1652 (Shoo 1). It was called Onishi Theater because it was located at the western end of the theater district. During the Genroku period (1688-1704), Arashi Sanemon, Sawamura Chojuro, Ogino Yaegiri and others were active as theater owners. It flourished for a long time as one of Osaka's large theaters, along with Kado-za and Naka-za, but in the late early modern period it declined and became a Naka-za theater. At the end of the Tenpo period (1830-44), it was renamed Chikugo Theater, and briefly flourished. It burned down in 1876, but was rebuilt and renamed Ebisu-za.
