…French philosopher and scientist. His Latin name was Renatus Cartesius, which is why Cartesian scholars and Cartesians are called "Cartesians" in French. He is often called the "father of modern philosophy" for his great influence on subsequent thought, as the thinker who first established the theoretical framework of modern science with his thorough dualism of mind and matter and his mechanistic view of nature, as a liberator through "reason" who taught the critical examination of all irrationality, and as the founder of the philosophy of "cogito (thought, consciousness)."
