Cardinalis Caietanus (English spelling) Thomas De Vio

Cardinalis Caietanus (English spelling) Thomas De Vio

Italian theologian and philosopher famous as a commentator on Thomas Aquinas. Dominican and cardinal. In 1518, he debated with Luther on the papacy and justification by faith, and opposed the Reformation. His major works include a commentary on Thomas's Summa Theologica (included in the Leo edition of the Collected Works of Thomas Aquinas ) and a commentary on De Ente et Essentia (On Being and Essence). In De Nominum Analogia (On the Analogy of Names), he rejected attributional analogy as an external nomenclature and accepted proportional analogy, which is close to ambiguity, as the only true analogy, which was supported by many Neo-Thomists, but does not fit Thomas' later works. Through his debates with Scotists and Averroists, his works contain terminology and problems that were not found in the 13th century, the height of the Middle Ages, but he does not place as much trust in rational knowledge as Thomas does in issues such as the immortality of the soul and God's providence.
