A fruit tree of the Rutaceae family. Along with apples and grapes in temperate zones and bananas in tropical zones, it is cultivated in the tropics to warm temperate zones and is a major fruit tree with high production volume. In Japan, the representative is the Unshu mandarin. In the past, the characters tachibana, kan, yuzu, daidai, and ki were used to refer to each fruit, but it is said that it was only after the mid-Edo period that they began to be referred to collectively as citrus fruits.
[Classification]
Citrus fruits are classified as numerous species in the Rutaceae family, subfamily Rutaceae, which are classified into six genera of the "true citrus family" according to Swingle's classification, or four genera of the "tribe Citrus" according to Tanaka Chosaburo's classification.

ミカン科Rutaceaeの果樹。温帯域のリンゴやブドウ,熱帯域のバナナとともに熱帯から暖温帯にかけて栽培され,生産量も多い主要な果樹。日本ではウンシュウ(温州)ミカンが代表的。古くは橘,柑,柚,橙,枳などの字がそれぞれにあてられていたが,これらを柑橘と総称するようになったのは江戸中期以降といわれる。

 かんきつ類とされるものは,ミカン科ミカン亜科に所属する多数の種で,スウィングルW.T.Swingleの分類による〈真正カンキツ類〉の6属または田中長三郎の分類による〈カンキツ連〉の4属に所属するものである。
