A mineral that formed under high-pressure environments or is stable only under high pressure. Diamond is a typical example of a high-pressure mineral. Using high-pressure minerals as clues, we can infer the pressure environment in which the rocks that contain them formed. The rocks that we can observe on the Earth's surface are classified into igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks based on the process by which they were formed, but some metamorphic rocks were formed when existing rocks were subjected to high temperatures and high pressures deep in the Earth's crust, changing their mineral composition. High-pressure minerals in the rocks that make up the Earth's crust are found in the metamorphic rocks that were formed in this way. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
