1811‐92 Belgian violinist and teacher. He studied under Rodolphe Kreutzer, and in 1843 became a professor at the Paris Conservatory, devoting his life to education. As a performer, he was mainly active as a quartet and sonata player, and often performed with Liszt. Among his pupils were such excellent violinists as Bieniawski, Sarasate, and Kreisler.
