Mitsiwa. A port city in Eritrea. Overlooking Massawa Bay in the Red Sea. The city area consists of Taurad Island, Massawa Island, and the mainland. Massawa Island is the port and commercial area, and Taurad Island is residential. One of the hottest cities in the world. The mainland side is particularly hot and has few inhabitants. In 1541, the Portuguese army landed to repel the Islamic army and assisted the Ethiopian army. In 1557, the Turkish army occupied it, and after that, the ruler changed several times, and in 1885, the Italian army occupied it. It was the capital of Italian Eritrea until 1900, and was the base for the Italian invasion of Ethiopia (1935). In 1941, the British army occupied it, and it was under British control until 1952. It is one of the best ports on the Red Sea, and exports coffee, leather, salt, pearls, etc. There is a thermal power plant and a cement factory. Population 16,579 (1986 estimate). 別綴 Mitsiwa。エリトリアの港湾都市。紅海のマッサワ湾にのぞむ。市域はタウラッド島とマッサワ島と本土から成る。マッサワ島は港と商業街,タウラッド島は住宅地。世界有数の酷暑の町。本土側は特に暑く住民は少い。 1541年ポルトガル軍がイスラム軍を撃退するために上陸し,エチオピア軍を援助。 57年トルコ軍が占領,その後幾度か支配者が交代し,1885年イタリア軍が占領,1900年までイタリア領エリトリアの首都となり,イタリアのエチオピア侵攻 (1935) の根拠地となった。 41年イギリス軍が占領,52年までイギリスの管理下にあった。紅海有数の良港で,コーヒー,皮革,塩,真珠などを輸出。火力発電所,セメント工場がある。人口1万 6579 (1986推計) 。
