Tetragonocalamus quadrangularis (Fenzi) Nakai

Japanese: シホウチク(四方竹) - シホウチク(英語表記)Tetragonocalamus quadrangularis (Fenzi) Nakai
Tetragonocalamus quadrangularis (Fenzi) Nakai
A medium-sized bamboo of the Poaceae family, also known as Shikakudake (square bamboo). Its culms are square when they grow, and are unusual in that they have short thorns around the nodes. The bamboo shoots appear in late autumn and are delicious. The larger ones can reach 4cm in diameter and 7m in height. There are 3-4 branches at each node. The leaves are long and slender with pointed tips, and the graceful way they hang down in clusters is used for decoration. In some areas, it is called Ibotake (warty bamboo), and is often planted in front yards because the thorns are believed to deter theft. The culms are used in making crafts. It is native to Taiwan and the Sichuan and Zhejiang provinces of China.
