1729 or 30-1800 A Russian general. Born to a general in the army, he achieved many military feats after his first combat in the Seven Years' War. In 1799, he led an expedition to northern Italy and Switzerland in the war against France, for which he was made a grand marshal and a duke. He wrote "Regimental Orders," which described soldier education, combat training, and internal affairs, and "The Science of Victory," which summarized military science theory. He contributed to the establishment of modern military science, and among his subordinates he produced such famous generals as Kutuzov.
