1873‐1941 American missionary. Korean name: Yun San-on. Graduated from Parke University, Missouri. Went to Korea as a North Presbyterian missionary in 1905, and became principal of Shinsei School in Seoncheon, North Pyongan Province in 1909. As a missionary sympathetic to the Korean people, he is said to have urged Christian students influenced by the March 1st Independence Movement to rise up in revolt. In 1935, while he was principal of Chongsil Technical School in Pyongyang, he refused to be forced to visit a Shinto shrine, and was expelled the following year by the Government-General. In addition to a biography of Jesus Christ in Korean, he is the author of Shinto Is a Religion (1937, in English), among other books. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
