Vātsyāyana (English spelling)

Japanese: バーツヤーヤナ（英語表記）Vātsyāyana

A scholar of the Nyaya school, one of the orthodox Brahmin schools of philosophy in India, who lived around 350 AD. He wrote an important commentary on the Nyaya Sutra, the fundamental scripture of this school. Later, Uddyotakara (c. late 6th century) wrote an commentary on his commentary. It is said that he is the same person as Bhatsyayana, the author of the Kama Sutra, which deals with sexual relations between men and women, the lives of ordinary people, and the arts and crafts, but this is doubtful.

350年頃在世したインドの正統バラモン系統の哲学派の一つニヤーヤ学派の学匠。この学派の根本経典である『ニヤーヤ・スートラ』に対して重要な注解書を著わした。彼の注解書には後世ウッディヨータカラ (6世紀後半頃) が評釈を著わした。男女間の性愛や一般市民の生活，技芸を扱った『カーマ・スートラ』の著者バーツヤーヤナと同一人ともいわれているが疑わしい。
