An Ash'ari Islamic theologian and a Shafi'i jurist. Persecuted by the Seljuk vizier (victim) Kundri, he fled from Khorasan to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina for a time, from where he was called the "Imam of the Two Holy Cities (Haramain)." He was eventually welcomed by the Seljuk vizier Nizam al-Mulk, who taught at the Nizamiya Academy in Nishapur, where he mentored many outstanding scholars, including Ghazali. [Nakamura Kojiro]
