He first wrote the humorous Sankyoshoku (1783), and two years later, his Wa-To-Chinkei (1785), which described the entertainment of Chinese people at the Maruyama pleasure quarters in Nagasaki, drew attention for its Chinese pronunciation and Japanese translations. His kibyō (yellow-covered novel) Kiruna-no-nekarakane-no-naruki (1785) was praised as a masterpiece among kibyō (yellow-covered novels) for its palindrome in the title and its reversal of the reality that money is made and then suffered, and his Tenka-ippa-me-bachi (1789), which satirized the Kansei Reforms, gained popularity. Other works include Kanadehon Yojingura (1798) and the collection Katakiuchi Uraminotaki (1809).
