The capital of Macerata Province in the Marche region in central-eastern Italy. It is located about 30 km south of Ancona, on the hills on the right bank of the Potenza River, which flows into the Adriatic Sea. Founded in the 10th and 11th centuries, it became the political center of the region in the 13th century, and a university was founded in 1290. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, and various industries such as brewing, brick making, and musical instruments are based here. Remaining buildings include a 13th century city wall, 15th century architecture, and a church housing paintings by Tintoretto. It is the birthplace of Matteo Ricci and the poet G. Cresimbeni.
