Knights of the Round Table

Japanese: 《
Knights of the Round Table

[Chivalry Films and Technicolor]
The rise of the chivalric film is closely linked to the spread of Technicolor (color film) and CinemaScope. It began with MGM's trilogy directed by R. Thorpe and starring Robert Taylor, which consisted of The Black Knight (1952), based on Walter Scott's chivalric novel Ivanhoe, The Knights of the Round Table (1953), based on the Arthurian legend, and The Swordsman (1956), also based on Scott's novel Ivanhoe, and written by Quentin Durward. The Black Knight, which was shot on location in England and France and was the first to project a real medieval castle on the screen in Technicolor, received a particularly strong response. In addition, the success of MGM's first CinemaScope film, The Knights of the Round Table, served as a stimulus for other companies to compete with MGM in 1954 by producing a series of medieval chivalry films shot on location in England and using CinemaScope. Columbia produced Alan Ladd's Castle, which was not CinemaScope, Fox's Fire and Sword, starring Robert Wagner, Universal's The Black Shield of Falworth, starring Tony Curtis as its first CinemaScope film, and Warner Brothers' Richard the Lionheart, starring Rex Harrison, sparking an unprecedented boom in chivalry films.
