Maseru (English spelling)
The capital of Lesotho. It is located in the west of the country, on the Caledon River, which forms the border with South Africa, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters. It was founded in 1869 by Sotho chief Mosheshu I, and the old mud-walled streetscape was destroyed in the Gun War of 1880, which broke out in response to a ban on firearms imposed by British administrators. However, it was rebuilt as a city with political and economic institutions such as parliament, government offices, courts, and banks, as well as a broadcasting station and tourist facilities. It is a commercial center and is connected to Bloemfontein in South Africa by rail. It also has an airport. Population: 197,907 (2006).
