Live line work

Repairing power lines while voltage is applied. This is the preferred method because it does not interrupt the power supply, but it is necessary to thoroughly eliminate the risk of electric shock by using tools and clothing. On power lines, live work can include detecting and replacing faulty insulators, replacing the clamps that suspend the wires from the insulators, and cleaning dirty insulator surfaces. This is often done with a live tool, a metal tool attached to the end of a long rod with high dielectric strength. It may be safe if the entire human body is sufficiently insulated and has the same potential as the wire, like a bird perched on a power line, but the general rule is to stay away from high voltage parts.

電圧のかかった状態で送配電線の修理などを行うこと。電力の供給を停止せずに行うので望ましい方法であるが，工具，衣服などをくふうして感電の危険を十分除いて行う必要がある。送電線では不良碍子（がいし）の検出と取替え，電線を碍子からつり下げる金具(クランプ)の取替え，汚れた碍子表面の清掃などが活線作業で行われることがある。絶縁耐力の高い長い棒の先に金属製の工具をつけた活線工具を用いて行うことが多い。電線に止まる鳥のように，人体全体が十分絶縁されて電線と同じ電位になれば安全である場合もあるが，高電圧部分には近づかないのが原則である。
