A process that gives cotton thread and cotton fabric a silk-like luster. When cotton fibers are soaked in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, they shrink and thicken while also becoming transparent, but if they are treated while preventing shrinkage, the fibers tighten and their diffuse reflection decreases, resulting in a silk-like luster and feel, and increased strength. This principle was discovered by the British John Mercer in 1844, and the process is named after him. It is mainly applied to high-quality cotton fabrics and silk-cotton blends, and is also used to improve the feel of rayon. Products that have been treated in this way are called mercerized.

綿糸・綿織物に絹のような光沢を与える加工。綿繊維を水酸化ナトリウム水溶液に浸すと，長さが縮まり太くなると同時に透明化してくるが，縮みを防ぎつつ処理すると，繊維がひきしまって乱反射性が低下し，絹のような光沢と感触を生じ，強さも増す。1844年英国のマーサーJohn Mercerがこの原理を発見，名は彼にちなむ。主として高級綿織物や絹綿交織品に適用され，レーヨンの風合改善のためにも行われる。この加工を施した製品をシルケットと呼ぶ。
