A process that gives cotton thread and cotton fabric a silk-like luster. When cotton fibers are soaked in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, they shrink and thicken while also becoming transparent, but if they are treated while preventing shrinkage, the fibers tighten and their diffuse reflection decreases, resulting in a silk-like luster and feel, and increased strength. This principle was discovered by the British John Mercer in 1844, and the process is named after him. It is mainly applied to high-quality cotton fabrics and silk-cotton blends, and is also used to improve the feel of rayon. Products that have been treated in this way are called mercerized. →Related items Mercerized | Broadcloth | Cotton fabric Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
