A small, long, narrow island in the Arabian Sea, in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Oman's Masirah Bay. A small number of Janaba fishermen live on the island. The UK had an air force and communications base there, but abandoned it in March 1977. The US continued to use the island, and in June 1980, an agreement was signed between the US and Oman on the use of military bases and facilities. However, the island is more than 600 km away from the Strait of Hormuz, which the US military considers a strategic point, and seasonal winds make it difficult to approach by air or sea for one-third of the year.
