A group of Chinese dialects centered in Fujian Province, also known as Min. There are large internal differences in distribution, and they are broadly divided into (1) southern Min represented by Xiamen (centered on the southeastern part of Fujian, the Hanjiang Delta area of Guangdong Province, and Taiwan, and further north scattered throughout the coastal regions from Zhejiang to Hainan Island in the south), (2) northeastern Fujian such as Fuzhou, and (3) northwestern Fujian such as Jian'ou. The estimated user population is 39 million. The Xiamen dialect is also the most influential dialect of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. A distinctive feature is that the old full-voiced initial unconditionally branches into both aspirated and unvoiced forms during devoicing.
