One of the six great cities of ancient India, it was the capital of the Licchavi people in central India. In Pali it is called Vesāli, and in Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures it is written as Bisyaris. Its ruins are currently identified with the village of Basarh, about 30 km north of Patna across the Ganges River. During the time of the Buddha (5th to 4th centuries BC), it was a republic. It eventually came under the control of the Magadha Kingdom and flourished as a commercial city until the Gupta Dynasty. The Buddha visited this place in his later years and spent his final abode in the nearby bamboo forest village. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
