Born: 1890. Cairo Died in 1949. Modern Egyptian writer in Cairo. Having lost his father at an early age and growing up in poverty, he graduated from the Higher Normal School in 1909 and entered the world of education, but switched to journalism in 1919. He was well versed in English literature, and also became familiar with Russian literature through English translations. He wrote in almost every literary genre other than drama, and published many works, particularly essays and novels. His representative novels include Ibrāhīm al-kātib (1931), Ibrāhīm al-thānī (43), and Thalāthah rijāl wa imra'ah (Three Men and One Woman), as well as more than 100 short stories. His works are characterized by humor, sarcasm, and witty, clear-spoken dialogue.
