Kaionji Chogoro - Kaionji Chogoro

Novelist. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture. Real name Suetomi Tosaku. After graduating from Kokugakuin University, he taught at Kagoshima Prefectural Ibusuki Junior High School and Kyoto Prefectural Second Junior High School. After his novels "Utakata Soushi" (1929) and "Fuun" (1932) were selected for the Sunday Mainichi novel contest, he retired from teaching in 1934 (Showa 9) to dedicate himself to writing. In 1936, he won the Naoki Prize for his novels "Tensho Onna Kassen" and "Budo Denraiki." His representative works include "Taira no Masakado" (1954-57), "Ten to Chi to" (1960-62), the serial novels "Two Ginkgo Trees" (1959-61), "Hinoyama" (1961-62), and "Kaze ni Naru Ki" (1963-64), and the historical biographies "Samurai Retsuden" (1959-60), "Akunin Retsuden" (1961-62), and "Saigo Takamori" (1976-78). In 1973 (Showa 48), he was awarded the "Person of Cultural Merit" and in 1977, he was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize. His historical novels, which praise masculine spirit and poetic sentiment, and his historical biographies, which exclude fiction and are compiled as literature on a higher level, are many masterpieces of historical literature.
