It is a deciduous tree of the Salicaceae family (APG classification: Salicaceae), and the larger ones can reach a height of 20 meters. The leaves are alternate, thick, long-stalked, ovate-circular, pointed at the tip, slightly heart-shaped at the base, roughly sawtoothed, 10-25 cm long, 8-20 cm wide, and slightly white on the underside. Dioecious. In early summer, panicles hang down from the ends of the branches, and many flowers bloom. The flowers are green-yellow. Male flowers have five tepals and many stamens. Female flowers have five tepals and one short-stalked pistil, with many degenerate stamens around the stalk. The fruits ripen red in autumn, and are spherical drupes 1 cm in diameter. Many of them hang down in clusters, making them beautiful and popular as garden trees. They grow in the mountains of warm regions, and are distributed from western Honshu southward to Okinawa, southern Korea, Taiwan, and China. The name is said to come from the fact that rice was wrapped in the leaves, or from the sound of the Chinese name, "I." The wood is soft and is used for crafts.

イイギリ科（APG分類：ヤナギ科）の落葉高木で、大きなものは高さ20メートルになる。葉は互生して厚く、長い柄があり、卵状円形で先はとがり、基部はやや心臓形で粗い鋸歯(きょし)があり、長さ10～25センチメートル、幅8～20センチメートル、裏面はやや白い。雌雄異株。初夏に枝先に円錐(えんすい)花序を下垂し、多くの花をつける。花は緑黄色。雄花は5枚の花被片(かひへん)と多数の雄しべからなる。雌花は5枚の花被片と1本の短い柄のある雌しべからなり、柄の周りに多数の退化した雄しべがある。果実は秋に赤く熟し、球形の核果で径1センチメートル、多数が集まって下垂し美しく、庭木とされる。暖地の山中に生え、本州西部以南から沖縄、朝鮮南部、台湾、中国に分布する。名は、この葉で飯を包んだからとも、漢名の椅(い)の音に由来するともいわれる。材は柔らかく細工物に使われる。
