Curse - Ju

It is an important practical element equivalent to the secret of words (kumitsu) in the three mysteries of esoteric Buddhism, and is also called "shu." Similar words include mantra (shingon), dharani (darani), secret words (mitsugō), secret words (mitsugō), myō (myō), divine spells (shinju), secret spells (mitsugō), and secret names (mitsugō). Mantras and spells may conjure images of mystical incantations, but they are actually secret words of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The ancient hymns to the gods in the Indian holy book, the Rig Veda, are also a kind of spell. In China, they have also been fused with Taoist laws of incantation.

密教における三密のなかの口密(くみつ)（語密）に相当する重要な実践要素で、「しゅ」ともいう。同類の語に真言(しんごん)、陀羅尼(だらに)、密語(みつご)、密言(みつごん)、明(みょう)、神呪(しんじゅ)、密呪(みつじゅ)、密号(みつごう)などがある。真言、呪文といえば、なにか神秘的なまじないを連想するが、本来は仏菩薩(ぶつぼさつ)の秘密語である。古くはインドの『リグ・ベーダ』聖典における神々への賛歌も一種の呪文である。中国においては道教の呪禁の法との融合もみられる。
