Of the nickel-iron alloys that make up iron meteorites, this corresponds to the metallic phase with a Ni content of 30-60%, and metallurgically corresponds to gamma-phase iron (face-centered cubic lattice). In addition to iron meteorites, it is also found in stony and stony-iron meteorites, but is thought to have crystallized under strongly reduced conditions. Mohs hardness 5, no cleavage. Steel gray to grayish white, opaque, white on a polished surface. Isotropic. No reflection pleochroism or anisotropy, and (111) twins present. It exists as a thin layer in the Widmanstätten structure seen in octahedrite. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
