Ebisu Daikoku

...It is believed that Daikokuten was added because Isaburo of Nishinomiya was originally two gods, Okuninushi and Kotoshironushi, but Isaburo was made into one god (Kotoshiro-nushi). It seems that Daikokuten was also considered a god of good fortune around this time, and the Kyogen play Isaburo Daikokuten of Mount Hiei and Isaburo of Nishinomiya are depicted as being enshrined. The Daikokuten Shinshiki, which is said to have been given to Ichinomori Choja by Kobo Daishi, states that "Daikokuten is capable of raising 15,000 people daily and satisfying all their desires."...

…これは西宮の〈夷三郎〉が本来大国主神と事代主（ことしろぬし）神の二神であったものが，夷三郎を1神(事代主神)としたところから，大黒天が加えられたものと考えられる。このころから大黒天を福神とすることも一般化してきたらしく，狂言《夷大黒》にも比叡山三面大黒天と西宮の夷三郎を勧請（かんじよう）してまつるようすが記されている。弘法大師から市守長者に与えたとされる《大黒天神式》には，〈日々1万5千人を養育し，一切の欲望が満足させられるもの〉とある。…
