Mother Family - Motherke

A representative family of clergymen in the New England colonies of America. All three generations of the Mathers were devoted to defending the Puritan system of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and are considered staunch conservatives, but they left behind a great legacy not only religiously but also intellectually. The first, Richard Mather (1596-1669), emigrated from England in 1635 and contributed to laying the foundations of the Congregational Church. The second, Increase M. (1639-1723), dedicated his life to preaching as a pastor in Boston, but also played an active role in a wide range of fields, including serving as president of Harvard University and as the colony's representative in negotiations with the United States.

アメリカ，ニューイングランド植民地の代表的聖職者の家系。親子孫3代のマザーは，いずれもマサチューセッツ湾植民地のピューリタン体制の擁護に全力を傾け，頑迷な保守派とみなされるが，宗教上のみでなく知的にも多大の遺産を残した。初代のリチャードRichard Mather(1596‐1669)は1635年イギリスから移住し，会衆派教会の基礎を築くのに貢献した。2代目のインクリースIncrease M.(1639‐1723)は，ボストンで牧師として説教に生涯をささげたが，ハーバード大学の学長や対本国交渉の植民地代表を務めるなど広く活躍した。
