Kanto Oroku

...In Kabuki, it is said that the first performance of this style was in Edo in March 1699 (Genroku 12) at the Edo Nakamuraza Theater in Isshin Gokaitama, which is said to have been the premiere of the Kabuki Juhachiban, but this is merely the oldest record of this type of role being performed by the Ichikawa Danjuro family. The performance of jealousy by a vengeful spirit was also included in the previous year's March performance of Kanto Oroku at the same theater. In Kyoto and Osaka, Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Fujitsubo no Onryo at the Mandayu Theater in Kyoto in 1677 (Enpo 5) is said to be an older work, but this is not certain....
