Lightning Surge

Japanese: 雷サージ - らいさーじ（英語表記）Lightning Surge

An abnormally high voltage or current that occurs instantaneously in high-altitude objects such as electric wires due to the effects of lightning. It can enter homes through power lines and communication lines, causing damage to electronic and electrical equipment. Causes of lightning surges include "direct lightning strikes" where lightning strikes a building's antenna or power lines directly, "induced lightning" where current is induced in power lines due to nearby lightning strikes, and "backflow lightning" where the lightning current flowing through the ground flows backwards through the earth, and the effects of these surges are said to extend up to several kilometers away from the point of lightning strike.

雷の影響による、電線などの高所にあるものに瞬間的に発生する異常な高電圧や大電流のこと。電源線や通信線などを通って家の中に侵入し、電子機器や電気機器の破損を引き起こす。雷サージの発生要因には、建物のアンテナや電源線などに直接落雷する｢直撃雷｣、付近への落雷によって電流が電源線などに誘導される｢誘導雷｣、地面を流れる雷の電流がアースを通して逆流する｢逆流雷｣があり、その影響は落雷地点から数キロメートル先にまで及ぶとされる。
