A village in Tone County, northeastern Gunma Prefecture. Population 5,606 (1995). It borders Tochigi Prefecture to the east. It occupies the mountainous area upstream of Katashina River, a tributary of the Tone River, and the northern slopes of Mount Akagi, and is surrounded by mountains over 2,000 meters above sea level. Most of the village area is forest land, most of which is national forest. The central settlement, Otsukai, is located on a river terrace on the east bank of Katashina River, and is accessed by National Route 120 (old Aizu Kaido). Most of the cultivated land is fields, mainly used for vegetable production. In recent years, production of asparagus, burdock, and other crops has increased. 群馬県北東部,利根郡の村。人口5606(1995)。東は栃木県と接する。利根川の支流片品川上流の山地と赤城山北麓の斜面を占め,標高2000m以上の山々に囲まれている。村域の大部分は林野で,国有林が大部分である。中心集落の追貝(おつかい)は片品川東岸の河岸段丘上にあり,国道120号線(旧会津街道)が通じる。耕地の大部分は畑で,野菜生産が中心。近年はアスパラガス,ウドなどの生産がふえている。林業が盛んで,製材工場も多い。
