Born on September 15, 1827. He studied Western studies and military science under Ogata Koan and Sakuma Shozan. He served the shogunate, was involved in the construction of Goryokaku in Hakodate, and taught Western studies, and later became a professor at Kaiseisho and head of artillery. After the Meiji Restoration, he joined the Ministry of War and served as a professor at the military academy and head of the Army Cadet School. He became an army colonel. He died on January 28, 1880, at the age of 54. He was from Iyo (Ehime Prefecture). He was commonly known as Hisaburo. His pen name was Taketo.
