A mountainous region that stretches across the northern part of the Czech Republic, bordering Poland and Germany. The name was given by Germans in the 20th century as a collective name for the present-day Jizerské hory, Krkonoše with its mountain Sněžka (1,602m), and Orlické hory. The region stretches from the Nyssa (Neisse) River to the Odra (Oder) River valley, measuring approximately 310 km in length and 30 to 60 km in width. Rich in minerals such as gold, silver, copper, iron, coal, and nickel, it was developed primarily by German settlers from around the 12th century, and became the driving force behind Bohemian industry.
