The largest river in Colombia, South America. Total length is 1,540 km. It originates in the Andes in the southwest of the country, flows north between the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central, and empties into the Caribbean Sea near Barranquilla. It forms a large delta near its mouth. It joins the Cauca River about 200 km from its mouth. It has long been an important transportation route connecting the inland highlands and the coast. The upper reaches of the river produce coffee, bananas, cotton, and other crops, and the lower reaches have oil fields. → Related article Ibagué, Colombia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
