A mistrial involving Jean Calas, a Protestant merchant in Toulouse, southern France. When his son, who had converted to Catholicism, was found dead after committing suicide (1761), the father was suspected of having murdered him and sentenced to death by slaughter by the Toulouse High Court. With the help of the skeptical Voltaire, the family appealed to the royal government for a retrial. The Conseil du Roi (Royal Advisory Council) declared the sentence invalid, and Calas was rehabilitated in 1765. This case, which showed the intolerance of Catholic forces towards Protestants, stirred up international public opinion.
