Bantu people - Bantu (English spelling)
Bantu does not refer to a single tribe, but is a general term for people who speak languages that belong to the Bantu language group, and may be called the Bantu-speaking peoples. Bantu languages are distributed over a wide area, covering one-third of the African continent, from Cameroon in western Africa to eastern and southern Africa. The total population is said to be 45 million, and there are more than 600 different languages. The Bantu probably originated in the Benue River basin around the border between Nigeria and Cameroon, but are thought to have migrated southeast before Christ and entered the tropical rainforests of the Congo Basin.
