…Unusually for an ukiyo-e artist, he specialized in hand-painted paintings and did not make prints, but mass-produced hanging scrolls of large standing beauties in extravagant clothing, with the help of his disciples. His typical beauties, with their free-spirited lines that are rich in variation and their clear color schemes that favor primary colors, were later nicknamed "Kaigetsudo beauties" and were very popular in Edo in the early 18th century (Genroku to Shotoku). In 1714 (Shotoku 4), he was exiled to Izu Oshima for his involvement in the Ejima Incident, but he was soon pardoned and returned to Edo, and it is almost certain that he continued to be active until 1733 (Kyoho 18). …

…浮世絵師にはめずらしく肉筆画を専門として版画を作らず，豪奢（ごうしや）な衣装を着た大柄な立美人の掛幅画を，門弟たちをも動員して量産した。肥瘦の変化に富む奔放な描線と原色的な絵具を好んで用いる明快な配色とによる類型的な美人画は，後世〈懐月堂美人〉と愛称され，18世紀初頭(元禄～正徳)の江戸で大いに流行した。1714年(正徳4)江島事件に連座して伊豆大島に配流されるが，まもなく許されて江戸へ戻ったらしく，33年(享保18)まで活躍をつづけたことがほぼ確認されている。…
