A Christian theologian of the Byzantine period. Known as the "Confessor" (Greek: Homologētēs, Latin: Confessor), he fought against Monotheism and died a tragic death that could be called a martyr. Born into an aristocratic family, he became secretary to Emperor Heraclius I, but turned to monasticism around 615. From around 640, he was involved in the denunciation of Monotheism, which was being carried out for political reasons at the time, and in 645 he debated with Pyrrhos, the former Patriarch of Constantinople, in Carthage.

ビザンティン期のキリスト教神学者。〈証聖者〉(ギリシア語Homologētēs，ラテン語Confessor)と称される。キリスト単意論と闘い，殉教ともいうべき悲惨な死をとげた。貴族の家柄に生まれ，皇帝ヘラクレイオス1世の秘書となったが，615年ころ修道生活に転じた。640年ころから，当時政治的な理由で行われていたキリスト単意論の弾劾にたずさわり，645年にカルタゴで前コンスタンティノープル総主教ピュロスPyrrhosと論争を行った。
