580-662 A Christian theologian of the Byzantine period. Known as the "Confessor" (Greek: Homologētēs, Latin: Confessor), he fought against Monotheism and died a tragic death that could be called a martyr. Born into an aristocratic family, he became secretary to Emperor Heraclius I, but turned to monasticism around 615. From around 640, he was involved in the denunciation of Monotheism, which was being carried out for political reasons at the time, and in 645 he debated with Pyrrhos, the former Patriarch of Constantinople, in Carthage.
