In America, the Birds of America (1827-38) by J. J. Audubon was a distant precursor, and the development of modern picture books had to wait until Wanda Gág's (1893-1946) One Hundred Thousand Cats (1928) and Marjorie Flack's Angus series. From that time on, stimulated by nationwide public library activities, the spread of offset printing, and the great success of Disney's animated films, picture books saw a dramatic development in expression and suddenly flourished.
