Born: February 21, 1846 in Ostschedeck-Ubenechowa
Died: February 23, 1908. Czech poet and novelist. Editor of literary magazines such as Svetozzor, Lumir, and Cvet, and representative of the literary collective Ruch. He advocated Slavic solidarity, envisioned modern society, and predicted the victory of the working class. His major works include the lyric poems Jitřní písně (Morning Songs) (1887), Nové písně (New Songs) (88), the allegorical works Slavie (Slavie) (82), Písně otroka (Slave Songs) (95), the narrative poem Ve stínu lípy (In the Shade of the Linden Tree) (79), and the science fiction-style prose trilogy "Mr. Broček's Epic Travels" (88, 89).

Tczew

A city in northern Poland, in Pomorskie Voivodeship. In German it is called Dirschau. It is located about 30 km south-southeast of Gdańsk, on the left bank of the Wisła River, about 30 km south of the river mouth. It developed as an important river port on the commercial route from the interior to Gdańsk. It first appeared in history at the end of the 12th century, became part of Poland in 1282, and was occupied by the Teutonic Knights from 1308. It came back under Polish control in 1454, but was occupied by Prussia in 1772. It was returned to Poland by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, and flourished as a transshipment port for coal exports until the construction of Gdynia. Industries such as machinery and food processing are located here. Population 59,857 (2002).

ポーランド北部,ポモルスキェ県の都市。ドイツ語ではディルシャウ Dirschau。グダニスク南南東約 30km,ウィスワ川左岸,河口から約 30km南方に位置する。内陸からグダニスクにいたる商業ルートの重要な河港として発達。 12世紀末に歴史に現れ,1282年にポーランドの一部となり,1308年からドイツ騎士団が占領。 1454年ポーランドの支配下に戻ったが,1772年プロシアが占領。 1919年ベルサイユ条約によりポーランドに返還され,グディニャが建設されるまで,特に石炭輸出の積み替え港として繁栄。機械,食品加工などの工業が立地。人口5万 9857 (2002) 。
