Year of birth: Unknown A scholarly monk in the early Muromachi period. There are many points about his academic history that are unclear. He first studied I Ching from Kizen at Engakuji Temple in Kamakura. He was invited by Uesugi Norizane to become the first headmaster of the long-abandoned Ashikaga School, and began reviving it around 1439. In 1446, he established three school regulations and worked to improve the school by collecting books. He was well-versed in I Ching and often lectured on Zhouyi. His year of death is according to the Abbreviation of Juji Seifu in the Ashikaga School Library Catalog. It is said that he attempted to travel to China to study the Spring and Autumn Annals, but was unsuccessful. There is a theory that Norizane donated the Song edition of the Four Classics Commentaries in the Kanazawa Bunko to the Ashikaga School at the request of Kaigen, who was living in Kamakura. <References> Kawase Kazuma, Study of the Ashikaga School

室町前期の学僧。閲歴は不明な点が多い。はじめ鎌倉円覚寺で喜禅から易を学ぶ。上杉憲実に招かれ,久しく廃絶していた足利学校の初代庠主(校長)として永享11(1439)年ごろから復興に当たった。文安3(1446)年に学規3条を定め,また書籍を収集するなど学校の整備に努めた。易に通じ,しばしば周易を講じた。没年は「足利学校蔵書目録」住持世譜略による。『春秋』を学ぶため渡明を企てたが果たせなかったともいう。憲実が金沢文庫所蔵の宋版の四経注疏を足利学校に寄進したのは鎌倉に住んでいた快元の求めに従ったものだという説がある。<参考文献>川瀬一馬『足利学校の研究』
